Police Raid Peruvian President’s Home, Looking for Rolex Watches

The police and prosecutors in Peru carried out a surprise raid at the home of President Dina Boluarte and the presidential palace early Saturday as part of an “unlawful enrichment” investigation into news reports that she had been seen wearing Rolex watches since taking office.

The raid, which came as Peruvians were celebrating the Holy Week holiday, shocked many people, even in a country that has grown accustomed over the past two decades to politicians investigated for alleged corruption.

Before midnight on Good Friday, the police used a battering ram to force their way into Ms. Boluarte’s home in Lima, according to live coverage on Latina Noticias. Prosecutors and the police then searched Ms. Boluarte’s office and residence in the


 presidential palace. The investigation into Ms. Boluarte began on March 18, after the online news program La Encerrona revealed that she had started wearing increasingly expensive watches, including at least one Rolex, since taking office in December 2022. Prosecutors suspect her of violating the country’s laws against unlawful enrichment and failing to declare assets. In Peru, the elected authorities must report to the government any assets worth more than 10,300 soles, or about $2,774, and disclose any gifts received from third parties.

Local news outlets have since reported that Ms. Boluarte has worn three other Rolex watches, as well as a $50,000 Cartier bracelet, and that banking authorities have detected about $300,000 in deposits of unknown origin made to her personal accounts before she took office.

  নওগাঁয় বোরো ধান কাটা শুরু হয়েছে। গতকাল শনিবার সদর উপজেলার দিঘলীর বিলে শৈলগাছী মধ্যপাড়া এলাকায়  তীব্র দাবদাহে অতিষ্ঠ জনজীবন। গরম থেকে রেহাই পেতে বৃষ্টির জন্য বিশেষ নামাজ আদায় ও প্রার্থনা করছে মানুষ। তবে এ মুহূর্তে বৃষ্টি চান না নওগাঁর ধানচাষিরা। কারণ, মাঠে পাকতে শুরু করেছে ধান। এখন বৃষ্টি হলে ধান নষ্ট হওয়ার আশঙ্কা থাকে। তাই রোদে পুড়ে ধান কাটতে কষ্ট হলেও এই মুহূর্তে বৃষ্টি চান না তাঁরা। তবে বিপরীত চিত্র আমচাষিদের ক্ষেত্রে। দাবদাহের কারণে আমের গুটি ঝরে পড়া ঠেকাতে বৃষ্টির জন্য হাহাকার করছেন আমচাষিরা। কৃষি বিভাগের ভাষ্য, এবার বোরো ধানের আবাদ ভালো হয়েছে। নির্বিঘ্নেœমাঠের ফসল কৃষকের গোলায় তুলতে পারলে নওগাঁয় ১২ লাখ ৫৬ হাজার ২১৫ মেট্রিক টন ধান উৎপাদিত হবে, যার বাজার মূল্য সাড়ে ৩ হাজার কোটি টাকার বেশি। আর ৩০ হাজার ৩০০ হেক্টর জমি থেকে এ বছর ৪ লাখ ৩৬ হাজার মেট্রিক টন আম উৎপাদনের লক্ষ্যমাত্রা নির্ধারণ করেছে কৃষি বিভাগ। কৃষি সম্প্রসারণ অধিদপ্তরের তথ্যমতে, এ বছর জেলায় ১ লাখ ৯২ হাজার ৯২০ হেক্টর জমিতে বোরো ধানের আবাদ হয়েছে, যা লক্ষ্যমাত্রার চেয়ে ১ হাজার ৪৯৫ হেক্টর বেশি। গত শুক্রবার পর্যন্ত জ...
